“If I died tomorrow and I had worn my wedding dress, all will be well,” says this week’s Our Perfect Wedding bride.
|||It’s been a while since we had an OPW review and last night’s episode is definitely worth a mention.
Ficksburg couple Mary and Phoka met in 1992 when they were both still in high school.
After Phoka managed to woo her, the couple quickly fell in love and have been together ever since.
When Mary was 16 she fell pregnant and Phoka did the right thing and paid lobola for her.
It took a while before the couple had a wedding ceremony Mary had hoped for. But finally after 23 years, she got it.
On their wishlist was the décor, catering and the wedding dress.
See, Mary had been dreaming about this wedding day for what felt like forever. All she wanted was to see herself in a white whimsical gown walking down the isle towards her man.
“If I died tomorrow and I had worn my wedding dress, all will be well” she said.
When she went for her dress fitting, Mary said she felt like an angel.
The decor had a black and white theme, Mary explained that this was also in relation to the fact that she was dark and her husband was a “yellow bone”. Sigh.
The reception hall would not be able to accommodate all the guests so the décor lady advised that it would have to be a first come, first served basis. Those who didn’t manage to get in would have to sit outside and hope for the best. There was also a gallery area in which to place more seats.
The food for the wedding looked mouth-watering with a varied selection. A definite good tick on the checklist.
Mary wanted to show her children how things used to work in the good old days, so she added elements of the past to her wedding like being taken to the church on a horse and carriage.
The bridesmaids were given leeway on their outfits and kept it simple with knee length dresses.
The maid of honour went a little overboard with the make-up - her face was on a powder overload. She wore a gold dress that clashed with her hair…of the same colour.
The small reception hall caused a set back when the bridal party came back from taking pictures. They had to wait for everyone to be seated before they could enter.
The cake came late after some miscommunication with the service provider. It was a black and white four tiered cake with flower detail.
The long wait for the reception to begin resulted in the guests being served the main course during the speeches. We all know how guests can get when they are hungry.
The traditional attire chosen was isiXhosa.
Both the bride and groom are SeSotho speaking but the bride wanted to honour her grandmother who was no longer with them.
The attire was cream and simple and matched the décor.
It was also the bride’s birthday so she received a birthday treat and everyone sang happy birthday to her.
As Mary put it:
“It was a special wedding for special people on a special day”.
