Must-visit hotspots for summer: Club 40/40 and Cocoon

Cape Town has added another high-end club to its bustling nightlife with the opening of Cocoon on recently.

Formerly known as Club 31, the addition with scenic views of the City Bowl is on the 31st floor of the Absa, merges East and West for a unique clubbing experience.

On the night of the big opening, MCC (Methode Cap Classique) flowed and guests were treated to Asian-inspired canapes.

Having recently undergone an R10m refurbishment, the club takes the East meets West theme, being split into two sections. On the East side, more experimental and deep house music played, while on the West more traditional club music thumped away.

The clientele Cocoon is clearly aiming for is more upmarket and it sports premium table serves and Asian-clad hostesses.

It was clear from the opening night Cocoon will provide fierce competition in the upmarket club scene battling for the same club goers currently frequenting Harringtons, SOUK, CoCo and Jade Champagne Bar & Lounge.

As space goes compared with its counterparts it is laid out spaciously with little waiting time at the bar.

The staff on the night were quick on their feet and in general knew what they were doing. Another club that joined the scene is 40/40.

Sporting a more urban vibe, the club is in 4 Buiten Street, it has a sizeable dance floor, a quiet VIP section and lounge area for those who prefer to sit and sip Bisquit Cognac.

The music ranges from popular pop and hip-hop music to truly South African gqom music which causes anyone to jump out of their seats and dance.

On Thursday’s the club also hosts Techno Thursday for the EDM heads to jump up and down.

The biggest difference between 40/40 and Cocoon compared with some of the other high-end clubs is space. Especially, compared with the go-to A-listers club CoCo.

Although people flock to CoCo to be seen, it is a small space. Also, if you are a non-smoker you will be stuck at the GoldBar downstairs.

Club 40/40 is an underrated gem, which has brought a nice balance between providing the kind of service you expect from a high-end club while still being approachable to those who just want to go out and dance.

Both clubs are where you will be guaranteed a good time and although Cocoon has the better views, 40/40 is no slouch and is a must-visit venue with summer fast approaching.

Weinstein responds to Lupita Nyong'o's harassment allegations

Harvey Weinstein has denied claims he tried to "take off his pants" in front of Lupita Nyong'o and asked if he could massage her.

The '12 Years a Slave' star is the latest actress to accuse the Hollywood producer of sexual harassment, alleging that when she refused his request she offered to massage him instead, but he has rejected her version of events and revealed she has since invited him to see her in a play.

Harvey said in a statement through a representative: "Mr. Weinstein has a different recollection of the events, but believes Lupita is a brilliant actress and a major force for the industry. Last year, she sent a personal invitation to Mr. Weinstein to see her in her Broadway show Eclipsed."

Lupita has responded to his statement and said she will give "no further comment."

The star says the movie mogul invited the 34-year-old star to his home in Westport, Connecticut, to watch a screening of a competitor's movie, but 15 minutes in she claims he led her to his bedroom and asked if he could give her a rub down, all while his kids were in the same building.

In her piece for The New York Times, she wrote: "Harvey led me into a bedroom - his bedroom - and announced that he wanted to give me a massage. thought he was joking at first. He was not. For the first time since I met him, I felt unsafe. I panicked a little and thought quickly to offer to give him one instead: It would allow me to be in control physically, to know exactly where his hands were at all times.

"I began to massage his back to buy myself time to figure out how to extricate myself from this undesirable situation. Before long he said he wanted to take off his pants. I told him not to do that and informed him that it would make me extremely uncomfortable. He got up anyway to do so and I headed for the door, saying that I was not at all comfortable with that. 'If we're not going to watch the film, I really should head back to school,' I said."

Before the alleged incident, the pair had lunch during which Lupita claims she ordered a juice but Harvey insisted she have a vodka and branded her "stubborn" when she refused to do so.

She later attended a staged reading of his show 'Finding Neverland' with two of her male friends, and then a screening of 'W.E.' on her own.
Afterwards, the pair went to the Tribeca Grill for a meal and she alleges he propositioned her once again but she refused and ended up
leaving the restaurant without even eating.

She wrote: "Before the starters arrived, he announced, 'Let's cut to the chase. I have a private room upstairs where we can have the rest
of our meal.

"I was stunned. I told him I preferred to eat in the restaurant. He told me not to be so naïve. If I wanted to be an actress, then I had to be willing to do this sort of thing. He said he had dated Famous Actress X and Y and look where that had gotten them."

Lupita later met Harvey at an after-party following a premiere of '12 Years a Slave' and claims he told her he "was ashamed of his actions and he promised to respect me moving forward", but she promised herself she would never work with him.

In 2014, she was offered a role in a Weinstein Company movie but rejected the part.

The star, who claims before ever meeting the movie mogul she was advised to "keep Harvey in your corner" but told he can "be a bully",
admits she "felt sick in the pit of my stomach" while recalling the experiences and a "flare of rage" that the alleged incidents involving
her were not "unique".

Harvey has been accused of sexual harassment by more than 40 women over a 30-year period. Following the allegations, he has been fired
from The Weinstein Company, and his wife, Georgina Chapman has left him.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi are planning a lavish ceremony to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary.

The 59-year-old talk show host and the 44-year-old actress are reported to be planning a lavish ceremony in Australia - where Portia was born - to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary in summer 2018.

The couple are said to be keen to renew their vows in front of friends, family and celebrity guests, including Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Pink and Julia Roberts.

A source told Australia's Woman's Day magazine: "They're recreating the beautiful wedding they had in 2008 with a few new twists.

"This second wedding will be a fresh start for them. They're so in love."

On Saturday night the festival announced the award winners at the closing ceremony, held at a red carpet event at the Westin Hotel.

The gathering was a collaborative effort with the City of Cape Town, Wesgro and the festival board.

They aimed to create a festival that not only celebrated the art of film, but also presented an active trading platform for local and international industry stakeholders.

Festival director Leon van der Merwe said: “The festival has definitely been a success, not only with the screenings, but also the seminars and training sessions. We strive to make it more relevant and bigger for the following year,” said Van der Merwe.

“If there is something I would change it is that I would like to have more films from young directors, what we call the new voices. If I can have more films from those young voices in the festival I would be ecstatic,” he said.

The 16 judges who determined the award winners are said to be international experts.

The jury members selected their best films which resonated with them and which they felt should be seen by other people or were worthy of being awarded, Van der Merwe explained.

“Each jury member has their own set of criteria, but then they get together to discuss each jury member’s selection for a certain category and they work it out from there,” he said.

Do the time warp at Space Odyssey

Cape Town - Glitter balls, strobes, the beats throbbing and the weekend scene at the Space Odyssey in Salt River: was this your life? Then DJ Russel the Love Muscle is looking for you to relive the best days of your life from yester-decade.

On Saturday, the Space Odyssey is having a massive reunion at West End, situated in the old Cine 400 in Rylands Estate, with DJ Russel spinning on the decks and his much loved and respected sidekick Shaheed “Slang” Meisenheimer flicking the light switches.

They plan to get patrons grooving to the sounds of old-school numbers, everything from Depeche Mode’s Reflexible to Brenda Fassie’s Weekend Special.

Space Odyssey was the place to be in in Salt River in the late 1980s and was famous for its hot mixes.

Neezaam Essop posted on Twitter: “Budgie would gate you with Purcells lol white levi...white t shirt...white troopers... black bomber jacket lol”, in reference to the club’s strict dress code at the time.

“I was 16 years old when I started going to Space Odyssey even though the age restriction was 21,” said Essop.

He fondly remembered that the music at the club was way ahead of the other clubs. Space Odyssey did not have a liquor licence in the late 1980s and revellers were allowed to bring their own “poison”, and Essop remembered VO Brandy and Coke as the drink of choice of the day.

Anthea Tommy, who said she “would not miss the reunion for the world”, remembered halter-neck tops and Emme jeans. “You would buy your halter-neck top at the parade on Wednesday to wear to the club on Saturday night,” she said giggling.

Her favourite was the opening Superman theme song that Russel the Love Muscle played religiously every week to open the dance floor.

* Tickets for the reunion bash cost R100 and will be available at the door.

Sunday Twitter was lit after numerous problems and subsequent scandals at the Migos Culture Tour in Johannesburg on Saturday night.

'Skrr Skrr' fans from across the country had been looking forward to the arrival of Migos consisting of Quavo, Offset and Takeoff.

READ: Nomzamo Mbatha's tax bracket comment causes Twitter uproar

While the Durban leg of the tour seemingly went ahead with little hiccups, the same could not be said for the Joburg leg that took place on Saturday.

Apparently, when ticket holders got the entrance they discovered they venue had run out of tags for the Golden Circle area.

Then according to fans at the show, there was a stampede in the venue for the Golden Circle section.

This, however, was only the beginning, by 9pm none of the opening acts had taken the stage and the crowd started getting rowdy.

Finally after 10pm, Nasty C took the stage which helped ease the angry of the crowd with him even bringing out Boity as a guest rapper which shocked both the concert goers and the Twitterverse. After his performance there was yet another break which left concert goers very confused. Migos finally took the stage after 11pm and the concert ended before midnight.  But what really sent Twitter into overdrive, was a tweet by @Shamiso_ on Sunday, who claimed that she was called by Quavo to the VIP section at Taboo night club. This then triggered Twitter user @Zane_Da_Phoenix with him claiming that Shamiso was courted by Mabala Noise to be a "stocko" for the Migos. Shamiso's mother then jumped in with hopes of defusing the situation. However, Files Twitter found a contradictions in her statement. After this Sunday Twitter had a field day with all the reponses and even commmented on the inappropriate use of the word "stocko".

Nomzamo Mbatha's tax bracket comment causes Twitter uproar

Mzansi's Nubian princess, Nomzamo Mbatha, has been caught in a Twitter storm after her second clap back to a troll online.

Sunday Twitter was yet again on fire after the Migos Culture Tour in Joburg mess and while everything had simmered down by the evening a Twitter user decided to troll Nomzamo Mbatha.

According to fans at the show, there was a stampede in the Golden Circle section at the venue, while others branded the event as poorly organisations.

Usually, one to not clap back the 'Isibaya' actress clearly was in the mood to set Twitter user @Litchi_HOV in his place after he commented "ur still wearing this dress from 2015 nee gerl" after she posted a photo of her in a purple latex dress.
Nomzamo then clapped backed, stating: "Sis, I think we should stick to dancing and leave the Customs Duty paying to mama. For the record, that one busted, dis' a new one". The resposes to her clap back set Twitter alight with people praising her for the response. The star then threw in another shady tweet for good messure: This tweet did not sit well with some Twitter users and debate sprung on Monday morning on whether the tweet lacked tacked and was anti-poor. However, not all of the Twitterverse thought that Nomzamo was being distatstefull in her tweet. Nomzamo has responded to outrage stating "The tweet was addressed at one individual who was being a troll. Context." Hopefully Nozamo's explanation will calm the tweeps enough to rest their fingers for the next heated Sunday Twitter session.

Following Sunday night’s 'Idols SA' Season 13 performance, Cape Town contestant Paxton Fielies has made it one step closer to living her dream having made it through to the show’s Top Five.

Fielies, 17, from Bishop Lavis, again wowed the crowd in the hopes of making it through to the next elimination round when she sang Don’t Walk Away by Jade.

Currently the youngest on this season’s show, Fielies, a pupil of Belhar High School for the Arts, said she is a “teenager who loves to sing and is passionate about her craft”.

She said “God, family and music” are the most important factors in her life.

She added that she has received amazing support from her peers and describes the youth in her community as goal-driven.

“The support they have shown is amazing.

"They have been supporting me since my journey started.

"The youth are all very goal-driven especially since there's a lot of gangsterism and crime taking place in the area,” she said.

Fielies, who was also a member of an a capella group at her high school, said she was motivated to enter the show by her mother.

“My mom encouraged me to enter Idols.

"I also wanted to grow myself as an artist and I knew this competition would allow me to do just that.

"It provides an amazing platform,” she said.

Speaking about her 'Idols SA' experience, Fielies said the journey “has been amazing”.

The teen said her favourite performances so far have been her audition song, Careless Whisper, and the classic Somewhere over the Rainbow.

She also had videos go viral on social media before her Idols auditions, which spurred her on to enter the national singing competition.

“I honestly did not expect to make it this far.

"I used to do covers and post it on Facebook and Instagram with 200/300 views, and now I'm performing covers every week for millions of viewers,” she said.

Meek Mill has had his assault charge wiped out after performing community service.

The 30-year-old rapper was arrested in March and charged with misdemeanour assault after allegedly having a physical altercation with someone who tried to get a picture of him at St. Louis International Airport in Missouri.

However, his lawyer Joe Tacopina told TMZ that he struck a deal for Meek to perform community service at the Veterans Association in Philadelphia, in return for having the charges dropped.

And it was recently revealed that Meek's arrest record will be cleared in his reckless driving case if he stays out of trouble for six months.

The star was charged with reckless endangerment after allegedly riding a motorbike irresponsibly in New York without a helmet, in August.

Witnesses are said to have alerted the New York Police Department to a group of people who were doing wheelies and riding dangerously along the street, and Meek was arrested after being identified from social media.

A post shared by Meek Mill (@meekmill) on

Sources told the publication the hip hop star was held for questioning in an Upper Manhattan Precinct following the alleged incident.

According to fans, Meek posted videos on his Instagram Stories of dirt bikes doing wheelies down the street.

Earlier this year, Meek was said to be heartbroken following his split from Nicki Minaj, who he dated for around two years from 2015 to 2017.

Speaking about their relationship, he previously said: "It was a win. I got Nicki when I was ... like I came up. I always wanted Nicki my whole life. I used to talk ... remember I had the rap about it. I bagged that. So that was a win of course.

"Of course breaking up with anyone you love is a loss. Period. Game time. Want me to make up a lie or something? It's so easy to tell the truth now."

Linkin Park have announced they will live-stream their tribute concert to the band's late frontman Chester Bennington, who took his own life.

The remaining members of the rock band are set to perform together at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Friday for the first time since the frontman tragically took his own life in July aged 41.

Supporters will be able to watch the live show - featuring an all-star line-up including Blink-182 and members of Korn, and System of a Down - on Linkin Park's official YouTube page.

The sold-out 'Linkin Park & Friends Celebrate Life in Honour of Chester Bennington' tribute concert will be a heartfelt farewell from his bandmates.

Also performing at the show are Korn frontman Jonathan Davis, Avenged Sevenfold members M. Shadows and Synyster Gates, several members of System of a Down, Yellowcard singer William Ryan Key, and solo artist Kiiara, who featured on Linkin Park track 'Heavy'.

The live-stream will begin at 7.45pm PST (2.45am, Saturday October 28 GMT).

Proceeds from the charity concert will go to Music for Relief's One More Light Fund.

Linkin Park singer Mike Shinoda recently revealed he was unsure about performing at the concert until he spoke to legendary producer Rick Rubin.

Mike said: "I had gone to Rick Rubin as a source of guidance. He said, 'I think you guys need to get onstage.' I think that'll be the thing that'll feel good. It'll be super, super hard. We haven't gone out together in public, we haven't played.

"[He said] 'The fans want to see you. Not because they want to see a show, there's a cathartic experience that needs to happen and it'll inform what you guys are doing.'"

Child author Stacey Fru's city book launch a hit

Multiple award-winning author Stacey Fru, 10, has hailed her book launch in Cape Town a success after completing her four-day tour in the city.

Stacey, author of 'Bob and the Snake and Smelly Cats', launched her latest book at St Joseph Marist School on Friday.

Stacey spent four months writing her second book, 'Bob and the Snake'.

Wits University vice-chancellor Adam Habib wrote its foreword.

The Johannesburg-based young writer was honoured with the 2016 National Development Agency Award for Best ECD Publication 2015: Special Mention Category for her first book, Smelly Cats.

She wrote her second book Bob and the Snake at 8 and, before she turned 9, she had accumulated three awards for her books and her work.

According to her mother, Victorine Mbong Shu, Stacey has written seven books.

During her visit to the Cape Times newsroom yesterday, Stacey said: “It takes inspiration, hard work and focus to be an author.

“The trip to Cape Town has been a wonderful experience for me and my mother. The schools we visited have been very interactive and have supported me by buying copies of my books. One of the schools will be donating money to the Stacey Fru Foundation.

“This money will fund my ‘African Book a Child Campaign’ and help me give African books and books by African authors to more children. The tour has been very great. Seeing the different places and mountains and the view is very amazing. Some main key moments are when I talked to the children and I see the look on their faces, I know that I have made my mark.”

Her mother said they had received “overwhelming support”.

“It goes a long way - especially here in the Western Cape. We found a lot of enthusiasm. There is that disparity between children - those who really want to make it in education and those who cannot make it."

Matt Damon knew Weinstein sexually harassed Gwyneth Paltrow

Matt Damon has admitted that he knew Harvey Weinstein had sexually harassed Gwyneth Paltrow.

Harvey helped propel Matt and his good friend Ben Affleck to fame by producing their movie 'Good Will Hunting' through his former company Miramax and Matt has admitted he was aware of some of Harvey's transgressions but insists he had no idea about the sexual assault allegations.

'Suburbicon' star Matt, 47, told 'Good Morning America': "I knew the story about Gwyneth [Paltrow] [being sexually harassed by him] from Ben, because he was with her after Brad [Pitt]. I never talked to Gwyneth about it. Ben told me. I knew that they had come to whatever agreement or understanding, she was the first lady of Miramax. He treated her incredibly respectfully. Always."

Gwyneth, 45, recently came forward to reveal the disgraced producer had made unwanted advances towards her when she was 22 and filming 'Emma', but she went on to make a number of other movies with him afterwards, including her Oscar-winning 'Shakespeare in Love'.

Harvey, 65, allegedly placed his hands on the blonde beauty's shoulders and suggested they head to the bedroom for massages.

She said: "I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified."

The star claims she refused his alleged advances and told her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt, who confronted the producer, and Harvey later asked Gwyneth not to tell anyone what had happened.

She added: "I thought he was going to fire me."

Since a string of sexual assault and harassment allegations were made against Harvey, he has been fired from The Weinstein Company and his wife of 10 years, Georgina Chapman, decided to leave him. He is now seeking treatment in a rehab facility in the US.

Meanwhile, Matt also revealed that he knew Harvey was a bully and a philanderer.

He said: "You had to spend about five minutes with him to know that he was a bully and he was intimidating...that was his whole kind of M.O. When people say 'everybody knew,' yeah I knew. I knew he was an a*****e. He was proud of that. I knew he was a womaniser. I wouldn't want to be married to the guy. This level of criminal sexual predation was not something I ever thought was going on."

KO’s motivated for another rap reign

Award-winning rapper, KO is back with a new album after a difficult time in his life saw him shy from the limelight. The king of Skhanda music released his second studio album, Skhanda Republic 2 and he described it as his “most honest work yet”.

After seeing major success in 2014 following the release of his debut album, Skhanda Republic, which debuted at number one on the charts and saw him walking away with three South African Music Awards statuettes in 2015, KO’s life took a turn he didn’t expect.

The former Teargas member’s record label, CashTime, which had some of the country’s biggest rising stars signed to it, lost it’s artists.

“It was a difficult time, I fell into depression and I am still dealing with it now. I have always been a person who gives, but maybe what I was giving was not enough and that’s when people started finding fault with me. There is also a lot of pressure handling your own career and others’, it’s not easy and that took a toll on me,” he said.

He did admit that he is in a better place and is excited about his new album.

“I started working on it early last year and when I had some music I took it to people I trust and whose opinions I value and they were very honest about the work I had produced at that point and told me that I needed to go back to the drawing board because whatever I put out, needed to be better than my previous album so that I could continue with the Skhanda Republic series. So I literally had to scrap what I had and start again,” he said.

He decided to give himself some time to breathe again before going back to the drawing board and in May he was back in the studio.

“With what happened with CashTime and with what people were saying about me, I was really depressed and it was affecting my work and my head space, but once I got into the studio for the second time, it took me four months to put the album together.”

Vulnerability

The rapper, whose real name is Ntokozo Mdluli, said that this album is unlike his previous one and that he made a conscious decision to show his vulnerability.

“Although this is a follow up series album, my first album was just an introduction to who I am and the beats I can spit, there was no real message or story, but this new album has a story, a clear message. I want people to know that it’s okay to fall, as long as you pick yourself up and keep moving.

"It’s an album of encouragement because I think I lot of people need that right now in the world we live in. The lyrical content is very motivational. Putting this album together was therapeutic for me and I hope it’s the same for people who listen to it,” he said.

He added that fans would learn his personal story with this album.

Although this is an album of motivation and persistence, it is also one that is socially conscious.

“I am not a politically inclined person at all, but I do feel that artists should use their platform to conscientise society and highlight real issues that are affecting us all... It’s okay to rap about the good life and champagne, but let’s also speak about real issues,” he said.

Before the album was released last week, he released No Feelings and Call Me featuring Nigeria’s Runtown.

“No Feelings is about how we should not allow our feelings get the better of us, I think that sometimes our feelings prevent our growth and stop us from doing things we really should be doing. Call Me is a song I like because of its Afro beat sounds. On the album overall I wanted my original Skhanda sound, but also soulful music with a hip hop twist, so the sounds are unique and everyone will enjoy the melodies,” KO said.

He was also certain that people were going to enjoy the album.

“This album really excites me and I am glad it’s out. This was difficult but I can’t wait for people to hear it. I mean this album has even got me going out again and mingling with musicians and putting me in a creative space, which is great. Yes, depression is an ongoing battle, but considering everything I have been through, I’d like to believe that I am in a better place and I am happier,” he said.

Dee Xclsv is best known at the contestant on Vuzu’s The Hustle who was booted off after he failed to deliver a verse in the battle round. What made for great television was when judge AKA said: “How come he has a verse and you don’t?” That comment has now become the rapper’s signature.

“You know, that day I was eliminated really wasn’t my day. I had failed a challenge earlier and I was not feeling myself.

So I already knew that seeing the judges was going to be difficult. In the battle round, they give you a pen and paper to write a verse to present.

"I had a verse, it was just not ready to be presented to the judges. It was a hard thing to go through when AKA said that and made such a big deal out of it, but I am very grateful he did because people know exactly who I am when I am performing. It’s somewhat of a signature because my single starts with the statement as well,” he said.

Born and raised in Rustenburg, the 21-year-old business management student always knew he wanted to pursue a career in music, but his parents never supported that dream.

“Both my parents are teachers, so from a young age, the importance of an academic education was drilled into me. But I grew up around music, so it was hard for me to ignore it.

KO’s motivated for another rap reign

"My father loved music and always played his music and I always knew all the words to the songs he played. After making it to the top 5 on The Hustle, my parents changed their minds and now they support my music,” he said.

The rising star said that it was the environment he grew up in that influenced his love for rap and hip hop. “I don’t think I was initially attracted to hip hop and rap because of the music at first, but rather because of the culture of the genre. Once that attracted me, I started listening to rap and fell in love,” he said.

Reflecting on his time on The Hustle, Dee Xclsv said that he only auditioned after a close friend insisted he go for it. “I auditioned for the first season and didn’t make it, so I was slightly bitter and told myself I wouldn’t go back. Then my friend basically forced me,” he said.

He said that it was it was a petrifying but rewarding experience. “I just learnt so much, it’s absolutely insane. It was really scary – to this day I still associate the smell of chlorine with fear because when we saw the judges, we had to walk past this pool and I always got that smell, which made me scared. As difficult as it was though, I enjoyed it – it was dope. I learnt to trust myself and my abilities and I also gained a lot of confidence.”

His work on The Hustle also impressed award-winning hip hop star Kwesta and the two recently released a single together, Flex Life.

“I met Kwesta while on the show and at the finale he actually shouted at me for not making it to the finals. At the finale I asked for his number and told him I had a song I wanted him to hear. At first I thought he was joking, but he gave me his number. I asked for a meeting and he agreed. We met in studio, I played him my song Flex Life and he jumped on it,” he said.

Nomzamo Mbatha's tax bracket comment causes Twitter uproar

Dee shot the video for the single and said the message of the song is a celebratory one. “It’s really a toast to how far we have come in life, and I say ‘we’ because it applies to everyone. It’s about celebrating everything, whether it is a new job or a promotion. It’s about acknowledging your accomplishments,” he said.

He is currently working on his debut EP.

'Bedford Wives' star sets sight on Broadway

Sharon Spiegel Wagner is a triple threat - she sings, acts and dances.

The mother of two girls, who she calls her “queens”, has treaded the entertainment industry for a decade.

But no matter how much time she spends singing, dancing and acting, she still considers her family her first priority.

“Family always comes first. I’ve just recently had my second baby and so I want to be around for her as much as I can.

“So it’s a juggling act that I’ve learned how to do very well. I do what I need to do in order to make sure that everyone is safe and okay,” said Wagner.

“I’ve also started to choose what jobs I take on, I don’t just jump into jobs like I did when I was younger. It needs to be good for my family, for my energy and must be financially viable before I agree.”

Wagner was born in Israel, but left the country with her parents who were search of a better, brighter future, when she was a year old. Although she still has family in Israel, she says her Israeli roots are diluted.

“My parents came to South Africa in search of a better opportunity and I was fortunate to have grown up here. I am proudly South African and in love with our rich history, culture and lifestyle and I would never trade that in,” she said.

While Wagner has made a name for herself in theatre, she recently bagged a role on the SABC3 dramedy, 'Bedford Wives'.

She plays the character, Despina Giannopoulos: a beauty queen, widow and crime boss.

The show follows the lives of four women and a community of Bedfordview criminals who, on the surface, live pristine and perfect lives but, behind closed doors, have skeletons in their closets.

The role, she said, couldn’t have come at a better time in her life.

She said the show is one that pushes the envelope.

“The story is amazing. It’s fast paced and funny and I really think it’s of an international standard,” she said.

Aside from her TV roles, Wagner said her heart belongs to theatre and she would love to one day act on Broadway.

“I would love to act the role of Fantine. Fantine is a fictional character in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables. She is a young orphaned grisette in Paris who becomes pregnant by a rich student,” said Wagner.

“After he abandons her, she is forced to look after their child, Cosette, on her own.”

She said her dream role for film and TV was to some day play the part of a superhero or a villain.

This multi-talented actress also tried her hand at music. In 2014 she and her a cappella group Honey participated in 'SA’s Got Talent,' where they finished fourth.

She says that while she enjoys singing, she doesn’t feel she will be able to tell her own story.

“I am better at telling other people’s’ stories and not my own. I would tell it with much confidence and charisma.

“I’m a very private person and I don’t think I could expose myself in that way, but who knows, maybe one day,” she said.

For now, Wagner said she’s enjoying being on screen and will someday love to be behind the scenes in a director’s chair.

Subtle brushstrokes of the pen evoke flowering of love

Whether his pen eulogises the enigmatic Mona Lisa smile of Tahani Salah, the dancing feet of Nomsa Manaka, or the defiant black power cry of Winnie Mandela, there’s no doubt about its sincerity and poetic power.

They are muses whose feminine beauty and talent transport the poet to imaginary and ethereal landscapes of love and longing. To the eye of this reader, this small but smooth collection conjures images of a breathtaking colourful landscape on canvas.

Indeed, his pen depicts pictures the same way an artist's deft brushstrokes paint astounding images. The poet in this anthology is the hopeless romantic who embraces love in all its whimsical and unpredictable characteristics. He is the suitor who wants to love like rain to the Kalahari. But he is also the beau who, like a thirsty garden, is waiting for a waterfall to quench his desires. His language of love uses the metaphor of music.

It is the language of jazz in all its universal and improvisational glory. It is the language of the blues with its genius to capture black pain and unrequited love. But his musical metaphors transcend jazz and the blues or any style - classical or contemporary.

His verses recall a primordial time when the marimbas and djembes were still novel creations in the soft hands of the African goddess of music, Marimba herself. The Wise Ones of this expansive land say that Marimba’s legendary singing could make mountains shed cold tears.

Flowers of a Broken Smile by Maakomele R Manaka

The lyrical beauty of these verses leaves all sorts of overwhelming emotional feelings with the reader. This collection is essentially a paean to womanhood expressed by a bard with the vocabulary of romance on his fingertips. In a rare moment of our literary times, the feminine persona is accorded the power and the glory bestowed to her by the gods and goddesses in antiquity, only to be robbed of them by the evil spirit of patriarchy.

The reader is transported on an eventful journey of romantic discovery through life’s desert storms of uncertainty to its rivers of hope.

And if poetry is a great river that runs through all sorts of Mother Africa’s rugged and scenic landscapes to the great oceans of the world, then ink flows in abundance in the veins of this poet.

To paraphrase the bard of bards Don Mattera, if genius is genetic then Mak Manaka is the personification of it. His father, the late Matsemela Manaka, was an artist of many parts whose unusual poetic gifts are evident in his son’s extraordinary verses. Flowers of a Broken Smile is his third anthology.

Levy Sekgapane to join rising stars in gala concert

South African tenor Levy Sekgapane will join forces with a host of rising stars for the Duet Gala Concert that will be held at the Artscape Opera House on Tuesday.

The concert, presented by Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, is in support of the fundraising efforts of The Duet Endowment Trust.

South African tenor Sekgapane has numerous accolades under his belt and recently won first prize in Placido Domingo’s prestigious Operalia 2017 competition.

Since winning the prestigious Belvedere Singing Competition in 2015, Sekgapane has rapidly become one of the world’s most sought-after young Rossini tenors, triumphing in high-flying bravura roles in major opera houses including Munich, Copenhagen and Rome.

Two other Belvedere winning South African singers, soprano Noluvuyiso Mpofu and baritone Mandla Mndebele, will star alongside Sekgapane, supported by an impressive roster of local singers and the Cape Town Opera Chorus.

Mpofu who hails from Port Elizabeth, is also rapidly garnering a number of impressive honours.

At the age of 26, the UCT trained soprano has already combined forces to sing with Sekgapane in The Barber of Seville, and among others, has performed in Rigoletto, Carmen, and La Traviata.

In 2015 she came third place in the Operalia competition; last year when the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, the “world cup” of opera, came to Cape Town she was placed second and also won the audience prize.

Meeting her in between rehearsals at the Artscape Opera last week, she said she was bitten by the opera bug at the age of 13 when she entered an eistedfodd.

“I listened to Don Giovanni and I was smitten. I was amazed by the music and the language and even though I didn’t know exactly what they were singing, the words spoke to me through the emotions expressed on stage,” she said.

So, as she related, she joined the local choir in PE and a blossoming singing career was born. When she was 14 she borrowed the DVD of La Traviata.

“It made a stamp on my growing love for opera. It was very compelling. One minute it was happy and the other it was sad,” she said.

From school she was accepted, after auditions, to study for a music diploma at UCT and was trained by Patrick Tikolo who was her voice coach.

“He took me under his wing and taught me how to read and understand music and also how to connect to music. In addition I was privileged to have master classes with among others, Angelo Gobbato, and learnt that underneath the singing technique, there’s the interpretation of how to build a character," she said.

“We were given the foundation but for me when I am learning a role I take everything I have studied and and make the character mine; make it unique.”

She has already travelled extensively for performances and competitions; performing in Porgy and Bess in Madrid, the Operalia in Covent Gardens and in August was the only South African to perform in the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Italy; the birthpace of the composer where she performed the role of Madama Cortese in Il Viaggio a Reims.

She was praised by operaclick.com for “a soft and extensive voice that safely addresses the agility that role requires. Her interpretation was rightly among the most applauded".

After two years as a studio member, Mpofu left Cape Town Opera this year to launch her freelance career in March.

But she’s quick to admit she still has a lot to learn and looks forward, in the future, to perfecting her technique.

“I want to do what’s best for my career. Opera like any performance art is one where you are forever improving.”

At the concert, the programme for the Duet Gala concert draws inspiration from two of Sekgapane’s most admired roles, Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville and Prince Ramiro in La Cenerentola. It will feature a sparkling programme of arias, duets and ensembles from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Massenet and Richard Strauss.

Also joining the stage is baritone Mandla Mndebele who recently took third prize at the International Hans Gabor Singing Competition 2017 and local favourite, Violina Anguelov, considered the quintessential Carmen.

Cape Town Opera’s associate music director Tim Murray will conduct the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) in this highlight of Cape Town Opera’s 2017 season.

Duet, the CPO and Cape Town Opera joint endowment trust, was established by Wendy Ackerman in August 2014 for the advancement and preservation of both companies.

The purpose of Duet is to build a fund to ensure that there is sufficient income to provide on-going injections of money to both organisations.

* The concert takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 24, at the Artscape Opera. Bookings through Computicket and all proceeds go towards the Endowment Trust.
