Fans at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival give Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa a rude reception.

Don’t get between music fans and Mafikizolo.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa got a taste of a tough crowd on Saturday when he was booed off stage at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The Minister, whose department is the official sponsor of the festival, was met with jeers and lewd gesturing from spectators as he attempted to make a speech during a Mafikizolo performance.

Mthethwa barely managed to squeeze in a few sentences about fighting racism before he took refuge off stage.

It was an awkward moment to say the least, one which Mafikizolo valiantly tried to rescue by chanting “Racism Must Fall”.

Naturally, the impromptu protest had a whiff of political intolerance about it. But it appears the fans in attendance were mostly upset that Mthethwa had interrupted their show. The Minister received no sympathy from Twitter observers.

“Why some politicians like 2 make speeches when ppl wants fun. As MP he failed 2 hold exec accountable (sic),” wrote one observer.

Another tweet suggested that the boos summed up the feelings of a nation: “This is taste of things to come. He should go & advise his principal the writing is on the wall.”

One tweet suggested that Mthethwa's timing was off.

“He was probably killing the vibe..reminding them of the ANC mess whilst they were trying to forget”.
