With only a few weeks to Lip Sync Africa's debut in South Africa, IOL caught up with the multi-talented actress, radio DJ, model and television personality Pearl Thusi and Nigerian music legend D'banj at the MTV offices in Hyde Park.

Pearl will serve as host and ‘master of ceremonies’, while “Koko Master” and “Oliver Twist” hitmaker D’banj will step up as the “colour commentator”, adding his lively observations to the show.

The critically acclaimed and an award-nominated US television show Lip Sync Battle, originally created for Spike, features celebrities going head-to-head, lip-syncing to the song of their choice, battling for the coolest bragging rights on the planet.

Asked if they can do better than the American version, D'banj said 'We are doing better, Africa is very rich in culture, and the fact that we are both doing African and International songs, whereas the American version only does International songs, that is already an added advantage for us, and the best part is, even if this is a franchise, we have made this one ours", Pearl enthusiastically concurred.

Asked how he feels about co-hosting next to Pearl as 'her eye-candy', D' Banj said" Well I have always being a candy, I entertain people and that's what candy does…but on a serious note though Pearl is doing all the hard work, she must know all the names of the people and be able to pronounce them very well, and she is good at it, for me I'm just going to be the candy'" he laughs.

Pearl jumped in and added " He is my eye 'candy' for the show to give to the people, because we know women love D'banj, and of course I cannot lie he is a handsome guy, he's just not there for me, but he's there for the women who want to watch the show, and I'm sure he can say I'm his eye candy to get the guys to watch the show as well'.

Both Pearl and D’banj were asked if they had anyone they were looking forward to seeing on the show and D’banj jumped in to admit that he does have a colleague from back home he is looking foward to seeing on the show, however he is not at liberty to mention any names.

We asked them what it meant for them to be chosen as the show’s hosts and they both seemed to share the same sentiments. Pearl, said this was a great and fantastic life changing opportunity and greatful to be part of an incredible social, cultural and media sensation which D’banj also agreed with. They both agreed that they are excited to be part of bringing it to the African audiences.

Viewers can get a dose of Lip Sync Battle Africa on MTV every Thursday from April 14 at 20:50 CAT and on MTV Base at 11:30 CAT every Saturday from April 16 on e.tv.
