Prosecutors were already reviewing a request – made by the ‘main accuser’ in the case – to reverse their ruling that there was insufficient evidence to put Sir Cliff on trial.
Now another man, who also alleges he was abused by the singer decades ago, has demanded a review of the decision not to press charges. Sources said both cases will be considered by a senior CPS lawyer who has had no previous involvement in the case. A decision should be announced ‘within weeks’.
Alleged victims are entitled to a review of decisions not to charge suspects under a scheme set up by the CPS in 2013. Last year one such review resulted in an independent QC overturning the decision not to prosecute Lord Janner over paedophile allegations.
A spokesman for the entertainer said: ‘Sir Cliff reaffirms his innocence and has every confidence the CPS will come to the right conclusion as soon as possible.’
Sir Cliff, 75, was the subject of a long-running police investigation which centred on accusations dating between 1958 and 1983 made by four men. The singer has always denied the claims.
