The Real Housewives of Potomac are crass, rude, scandalous, and we like it like that
|||Where in the world is Potomac? That was the question on everyone’s lips when The Real Housewives reality TV show franchise announced the newest spin-off.
Well, Potomac is located in Maryland and has a population of about 45 000 people. Make that 45 000 filthy rich people. As Gizelle, one of the cast members of The Real Housewives of Potomac, proudly announces on the show: “Only legacy or large cash flow can get you in (to Potomac).” How she got in? Legacy. Her grandfather worked alongside Martin Luther King, but Gizelle has a different struggle. She’s newly divorced and doesn’t like to shut her mouth when she is around some of the older ladies on the show.
Those ladies include Karen, who is the self-confessed rags-to-riches story – and, strangely, looks a hell of a lot like Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Lawson. Karen is so staunch in her belief that Potomac women are classy and should carry themselves in such a manner that she actually buys people books on etiquette.
There’s also Charisse, who knows everyone in the right tax bracket. She always throws lavish parties at her mansion, but something is brewing in her marriage and the other ladies will only be too happy to find out what.
Robyn is also divorced – sorta, kinda. She’s still living with the man she was married to and they’re still – when he feels like it – living as a married couple, if you catch our drift. Of course, the other ladies don’t approve and they’re not shy to let her know.
Ashly is the newbie and the wild card. She’s young, married to a too-forward sugar daddy and, as expected, she gives the older ladies heart palpitations because of how she dresses, the things she says and her love for whiskey. Oooh, how unladylike.
These women are a hot mess to watch – just the way we like our reality TV. But one of the drawcards of the show is just how different Potomac is from the other cities in the franchise. It’s not full of skyrises like New York, or lush like Atlanta, but it is interesting.
What if the franchise took a turn to good ol’ Mzansi? Which cities or towns would we want to see put on the map? How about The Real Housewives of Nelson Mandela Bay? With the country’s politics being what they are, it would be interesting to see which wives in high places actually got to keep their houses in that district.
And The Real Housewives of Silverlakes? Can you say “posh”, honey? Perhaps it would be a thought to get the franchise down to Diepsloot or even Alexandra because maybe then that community would finally get houses. The show is called The Real Housewives, after all. Which places would you like to see in the franchise?
The Real Housewives of Potomac premieres on Vuzu Amp (DStv channel 103) on August 30 at 6.30pm.
