Nyovest posts Facebook video saying his “Kanye West of South Africa” comment and others were taken out of context.

Cassper Nyovest has decided to break his silence over the critcism he received since his interview on Sway In the Morning. The rapper, who landed in South Africa on Wednesday, decided to set the record staright and address a few ‘issues’.

He took to Facebook this week to say that his comments were taken out of context. He was referring to his remark that he is known as “The Kanye West of South Africa”, his “I wanna be an American comment”. He also spoke about the freestyle he did during the interview.

In a lengthy live video post, the rapper suggested that fans were expecting him to flop on the show, and he proved them wrong.

“People thought Cassper on Sway was gonna suck. They were like, ‘Cassper can’t rap’, which I always find funny because I came in this game raping… People thought, ‘okay we’re are going to watch the interview and Cassper is going to choke’… Man was I well mother f**king prepared for that sh*t,” he said.

He added that the rap audience in South Africa “think they know so much, but they actually don’t even know that much about hip hop. They get excited for simple lines...”

He went on to explain some of his lines to emphasise his point.

Even though the Kanye West comment shocked his fans the most, the rapper maintained that he has heard that comparison multiple times.

“I’ve been compared to Kanye so many times, so many times. Friends have said ‘Yo, you remind me of Kanye’, ‘you like the Kanye West of South Africa’ - but that’s not the point. Even when I filled up the Dome, Sizwe tweeting saying the production at Fill Up The Dome was better than Kanye's - but that’s not the point. The question was how important is America in Africa, or in South Africa. And I explained that it’s so important, it’s such a big deal, that they call me the Kanye West of South Africa… in South Africa, that is an actual compliment. So much that when I said it on Sway’s show, people were like, ‘you are lying’. For them it was such a big deal when you say you are the Kanye West of South Africa, you can’t even say that because for them Kanye is Kanye and you are Cassper Nyovest, because you are South African,” he said.

Seemingly addressing Ntsiki Mazwai’s statement that the rapper’s remarks during the interview made her “embarrassed to be South African”, Nyovest also explained his approach to the questions he received and his “I wanna be American”.

“Only now we are finding ourselves and our culture and we are proud of who we are, and that is why we can get a South African rapper on Sway in the mother f*cking Morning, because I understand who I am right now. I am an African kid who has been influenced by western culture, so much that it was a compliment when somebody said, ‘you are the Kanye of South Africa’. But you can google my interviews where I say that I am not the Kanye West of South Africa, I am Cassper Nyovest”.
