Bonang Matheba faces backlash for accepting Uganda gig in light of anti-gay laws.
|||The Bonang Matheba brand is making strides across the African continent, but some people feel she should watch her step. Surprisingly, Pearl Thusi isn’t one of them.
Instead, Bonang raised the ire of the gay community by agreeing to host the second annual Uganda Entertainment Awards. The popular radio and TV personality faced a Twitter backlash, led by DJ Olwee, over accepting the gig in a country known for it’’s anti-gay legislation.
“So Bonang who has a huge following of gays who are 1st to fight for her is hosting Ugandan Awards instead refusing in protest of their laws,” wrote Olwee.
“I mean, she's one of the most powerful women in entertainment in Africa. I'm just saying!”
Many others were in agreement with that statement.
“It's concerning for any public figure to have anything to do with Uganda, considering it's totalitarian, anti-LGBT laws @bonang_m reconsider,” read one response.
Some of Bonang’s fans however, couldn’t understand what the fuss was about.
“I don't get the issue about Bonang hosting a gig in Uganda. It's not the government of Uganda that is going to be paying her,” said one poster, while another added, “Bonang is not going to UGANDA to promote #AntiGayLaws, she's going there to work, which is her proffession. deal with it and move on.”
Olwee, however, remained adamant. “Defend her all you want but ask yourself if her make up artist and assistant feel comfortable going there. They're gay.”
And Bonang?
Queen B seemed reluctant to engage in a Twitter debate, writing: “@Olwee you have my number. Be blessed.”
