Kids with amazing skills take centre stage in Little Big Shots

When Whitney Houston sang about believing that the children are our future in the song The Greatest Love of All (you now have the earworm, right? You’re welcome), she was talking about adults treating their offspring with respect. It might sound like a cliche, but kids really are the leaders of tomorrow.

The 28-year-old NBA sensation who is shooting the impossible shot in the current NBA series, Stephen Curry, was only a toddler when Michael Jordan was at his peak. His “airness”, as we knew Jordan, was so good no one thought anyone could do it better.

Of course, there were names mentioned over the years, but slowly that’s diminishing. In fact, if things remain the way they are where Curry’s game is concerned, he could be the next Jordan in five years’ time. Yet, we can’t ignore what Jordan did for Curry even if the two never met while he was still playing. It’s the inspiration Jordan gave to all those who loved the game that has given birth to new stars.

This applies to any discipline. Kids learn from their surroundings. Give your child a tennis racquet and you might have inspired a successor to Serena Williams . It’s that simple, yet you can’t force it on them.

DJ Black Coffee is said to have been inspired to make music after his mother gave him some basic computer equipment to play with and he spent an evening figuring out how to make music. Look at him now.

On Steve Harvey’s Little Big Shots, we meet toddlers and pre-school kids with phenomenal intellectual skills. They can do anything from determining the square root of any number to spelling tricky words like pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Yes, let that marinate for a second.

With Harvey failing a mundane thing like reading out the winner of Miss Universe 2015, it is funny that he hosts a show about smart people. His exclamations are always true, but it also helps that he is a comedian and good at milking his reactions.

There is little background on how the kids became that “clever”, but if you have a child you will be inclined to teach them something just so they can have a chance in life.

Some theories suggest playing classical music to pregnant women because, apparently, it stimulates intelligence in the foetus. Whatever it is that you end up doing, Little Big Shots will leave you feeling the need to improve yourself.

Little Big Shots airs Monday to Friday at 6.30pm on M-Net (DStv channel 101).
