Johannesburg - Legendary R&B group The Manhattans are bringing their soulful sound to the City of Gold and the Mother City in July.

The Manhattans, one of the premiere R&B vocal groups in the world, join a list of international artists who have in recent months left local music fans spoiled for choice with a series of concerts around the country.

The organisers, Big Concerts, have already brought Lionel Richie, Nicki Minaj, Chris de Burgh and Josh Groban to our shores, while Mariah Carey, George Benson and Seal have been booked already.

Carey, the We Belong Together hit-maker, is already in the country for her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour on Tuesday (Cape Town), Friday (Durban) and next Sunday (Joburg).

The Manhattans, with Gerald Alston, will share the stage with celebrated songstress Regina Belle, pictured, in Joburg and Cape Town as part of Big Concerts’ The Legends of R&B series.

The Manhattans, who named themselves after the popular cocktail, formed up in the early 1960s and have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. They have also recorded 12 top 10 R&B hits in the US, charting on the Billboard for the first time in 1965.

The Joburg shows will be from July 21 to 23 at the Teatro at Montecasino in Joburg and the Cape Town show is on July 24 at the Grand Arena, GrandWest.

The Manhattans rose to prominence in 1972 with the release of One Life to Live, followed by the hit singles There’s No Me Without You, Don’t Take Your Love and Hurt.

Superstardom came in 1976 when Kiss and Say Goodbye became the group’s first No 1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&B charts. Follow-up hits included I Kinda Miss You, It Feels So Good to Be Loved So Bad, We Never Danced a Love Song and Am I Losing You.

Belle is best known for her singles Baby Come To Me and Make It Like It Was. She is most notable for her Grammy award-winning duet with Peabo Bryson, A Whole New World, for Disney’s 1992 animated feature film Aladdin.

Regina was introduced to The Manhattans by New York radio DJ Vaughn Harper and began working as their opening act.
