ANC hails SABC’s “radical” decision to impose a 90% SA music quota on radio stations, as fans give a mixed reaction.
|||Social media has been shaken up by the SABC’s decision to impose a quota which will see only 10% international music content played on our radio stations.
The ANC also released a statement in response to a decision that had music artists beaming with excitement, with a more mixed response from radio listeners who are accustomed to feasting on mostly American content throughout the day.
The party’s statement read:
The African National Congress commends and supports the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for the radical decision to implement a 90% quota for local music to be played on all 18 SABC owned radio stations from tomorrow, 12 May 2016.
The ground breaking decision by the public broadcaster follows an important and successful consultative process with various representatives of the music industry throughout the length and breadth of the country.
As the ANC, we believe this much welcomed decision will go a long way in empowering South African artists, and consequently promoting the African culture locally and to the rest of the world.
We are confident that the people of South Africa will, equally, welcome the changes to local content offering across their radio stations. We support the decision to extend such offerings to SABC television and other digital platforms, which will also be implemented later this year.
The people of South Africa will progressively have a public broadcaster that fully reflects the various styles of local music on offer. Indeed, people's power is advanced through the SABC.
