#OpenUpTheIndustry: Twitteratti claims they are tired of seeing the same faces on TV.
|||Landing a new gig should have been reason for actress Boity to celebrate. Instead, it led to her being attacked on social network site Twitter leading to the start of the trending topic #OpenUpTheIndustry.
MTV announced that Boity, real name Boitumelo Thulo, will be one of the co-hosts of a new show Ridiculousness Africa. The show is going to be hosted by Thomas Gumede and will work alongside Boity and Nigerian comedian Basketmouth.
Instead of Twitter users being excited about her new job, they attacked her and claimed there were tired of seeing the same faces on TV shows.
The #OpenUpTheIndustry was about how television and radio shows should give attention to new talent instead of casting the same people over and over again. People in the entertainment industry defended being cast in more than one show by trying to show that they cannot survive on one gig.
Former Scandal actress Masasa Mbangeni said: “To some this is a joke. A cute TT. To others it's the difference between having food on the table and going to bed with sugar water.” Actress Rami Chuene said it was not easy to be in the industry. She said: “Get an agent, go for auditions, study the craft, be ready and willing to go without sleep.
It's not as easy as it looks #OpenUpTheIndustry” .@ThickLeeyonce agreed with her. She said: “Artists don't make enough money, one job on one show is not enough so u can't be mad at them 4 being on every other show #OpenUpTheIndustry”. (sic)
Actress and Afternoon Express presenter @BonnieMbuli said: “This whole “new faces” rhetoric is also sponsored by the “anyone can do this”,”this isn't a real talent “ ,abayanga eskholeni mentality.” DJ and radio presenter Lerato Kganyago said people have always hated her. She tweeted: “I have ONE gig on TV and you put me on a list ya people with 5 gigs on TV. ߘ? SMDH.(sic)
#OpenUpTheIndustry” Television writer @PhathuMakwarela said: “Truth is that most of us in the industry are underpaid - like one salary away from being destitute #OpenUpTheIndustry they say.” @ShakaSisulu said: “Ironically many people in the industry are a weekly wage away from poverty. coz it's way too open. And not unionised #OpenUpTheIndustry” ( sic)
Another tweep said it was not impossible for shows to succeed without well-known artists. @NkosazanaSh said: “Big up to @SkeemSaam SABC1 when it started mostly young and fresh talent & they are doing well #OpenUpTheIndustry” .
In all of this Boity was not phased by the attacks. She tweeted: “Stop being so offended by other people's success. Your path is waiting for you to embrace it. That's where your riches are.” (sic)
