“We wanted to make a film that we wished someone had made when we were young,” says The People versus the Rainbow Nation’s director.
|||New town Junction cinema became a mini glamourous location last night with a red carpet and paparazzi.
The pre-screening of the film The People versus the Rainbow Nation directed by Lebogang Rasebatha - a South African documentary maker - attracted media and a number of celebrities.
Commisioned by one of Africa’s leading youth-focused brands MTV (DStv channel 130) and MTV Base (DStv channel 322) the film goes behind the headlines to investigate the force behind the mobilisation of the mass action campaigns that have totally changed the dialogue on political issues in South Africa, namely, #feesmustfall, #rhodesmustfall, #zumamustfall.
The documentary tackles issues faced by the post-apartheid generation and tries to understand what exactly they are fighting for.
The issues addressed may be “sensitive” to some people, but many will appreciate its brutal honesty and its debate-sparking ability.
Rasebatha, speaking of his goals in making the documentary, said “We wanted to make a film that we wished someone had made when we were young to help us make sense of the constructs of society, how to engage the systems of power at play and where we as individuals fit in all of this.”
The film features opinions of students and well-known media personalities such as singer Nakhane Toure, rapper and producer Reason and comedienne Nina Hastie, among others.
Tats Nkonzo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Azania Mosaka and Culoe The Song are some of the media personalities that made an appearance at the screening.
The People versus the Rainbow Nation premiers on MTV and MTV Base on Thursday April 21, at 21:15 and on Wednesday April 27, at 12:00 CAT (Central African Time).
