WHEN we say someone has “arrived”, figuratively speaking, we mean they have reached that point of success where they are comfortable in their career. From that point on, they have to choose their jobs and not be chosen by the job.
TV and radio personality, Lerato Kganyago, is at exactly that point since being nominated to host Live AMP.
Kganyago, who started the gig last week, takes over from Pearl Thusi who’s departed the show and can now be seen on MTV Base’s Lip Sync Battle Africa. Kganyago will be riding shotgun with DJ Warras who has been on the show for a while.
“I will be bringing in my extensive TV presenting experience, from presenting a sports show during the 2010 World Cup to presenting a lifestyle show, The Link, and now a music show which relates to my DJing career that I’ve just begun. Being a club DJ also means I’m constantly interacting with people with regards to the latest music trends and that’s what I’m looking forward to bringing to the show,” she said.
For a long time, Live AMP has been a show that we thought Kganyago would be on. She started out at Soweto TV and when she moved to the SABC she had a show of her own, although at that time the word on the street was that she was joining Live AMP. She then got her own show, The Link, which was a sit-down and catch-up with celebrities.
Live AMP has made big brands out of people like Bonang Matheba, Thusi, Minnie Dlamini and Luthando Shosha who have all gone on to pursue other interests.
Now it is Kganyago’s turn to cash in on her experience which separated her from the rest of the people who wanted this role.
“We can confirm that she emerged a successful candidate after a search for a suitable person. The search attracted a lot of people, but she got the job and we can only wish her well in her endeavour,” said the SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago.
Her team on Live AMP are keen to work with her.
“From her days as presenter on Soweto TV, Lerato has accumulated a wealth of television experience and has always shown great potential. We are looking forward to working with her,” said her producer, Sjula Dhlamini from Live AMP.
Live AMP airs Fridays, 7pm on SABC1.
